The Mr. Olympia Contest was created by Joe Weider when he realized that the bodybuilders of the 1960s needed a contest worthy of their talents. It was one superstar in particular, Larry Scott, who motivated Weider. Having already won the Mr. America and Mr. Universe titles, there were no titles left for Scott to win, and no money to be made from a bodybuilding career.
Weider had the foresight to recognize that the sport of bodybuilding would never reach its potential without an opportunity for athletes to compete and make a living doing so.

Thus, in 1965, the first Mr. Olympia was held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. Larry Scott indeed won the first title, claiming victory again in 1966. After announcing his retirement in 1967, the playing field was wide open.

Sergio Oliva easily took the third and fourth Mr. Olympia titles in 1967 and 1968, and not so easily in 1969, when he faced his first real competition in newcomer Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In 1970, Arnold became the third man to hold the Mr. Olympia title. In 1971 Arnold took the title unopposed, but in 1972 another epic battle ensued between Oliva and Schwarzenegger. Winning by a four-to-three vote in Arnold’s favor, the decision over who should have won in ’72 continues to be debated today.

In 1973 New Yorkers witnessed Arnold win for the fourth consecutive year, breaking Oliva’s record and making him the biggest Olympia winner to date. In 1974 Arnold faced a new formidable challenger in Lou Ferrigno. Still, Arnold could not be defeated and won for a fifth time.
Forever preserved on film in “Pumping Iron,” in 1975 Arnold wins again, this time followed by announcing his retirement.

After more than five years of trying, Franco Columbu wins in 1976, where he too announces his retirement.

The next three competitions belonged to Frank Zane (1977 – 1979). Though Zane seemed unbeatable, 1980 would prove to be the most controversial in Olympia history.

It was in 1980 that Arnold shocked the bodybuilding community by making a comeback to win his seventh and last title, once again leaving the playing field open.

Not to be outdone by his famous friend, Franco Columbu staged a comeback of his own to win the 1981 title in a tight contest of 16 contestants.

Chris Dickerson became Mr. Olympia in 1982 after finishing second the previous two years. After winning, he announced his retirement onstage.

In 1983 the title was won by the Lion of Lebanon, Samir Bannout.

Mr. Olympia in 1984 had the highest attendance and largest amount of total prize money to date--$100,000. It also featured the largest Mr. Olympia competitor, a 5’11”, 247-pound Lee Haney, who would break all records beginning with his first by winning eight consecutive titles. It was his sixth win in 1989 where he faced his toughest challenge from Lee Labrada and Vince Taylor, and in his record-breaking and final eighth Mr. Olympia in 1991, he faced his first competitor who was as big as he was, Dorian Yates.

A new Mr. Olympia would be crowned in 1992, partly because Lee Haney had decided to retire. Dorian Yates would win six straight titles in a row (1992-1997), experiencing his toughest victory in 1994, when earlier in the year he suffered a severely damaged rotator cuff, torn quad and bicep, then cruising to victory while looking his best is 1996.

With Dorian’s retirement in 1997 came a new victor, and the beginning of a new era.

In 1998, with a total prize package of $285,000, seemingly out of nowhere came newcomer Ronnie Colman with his massive back and freaky posture to beat out Flex Wheeler and begin a record-tying, eight-year winning streak.

By 2000 Ronnie was untouchable, but in 2001 Ronnie receives a scare from newcomer Jay Cutler, who would become his greatest challenger from this point on.

Olympia 2002 would be known as the year of Gunter Schlierkamp, who despite being in his best condition ever loses to Ronnie but receives an unprecedented standing ovation from the crowd—an audience that showed more admiration for a bodybuilder than ever before.

In 2003, Ronnie was in his best shape ever at age 39—almost inhuman. The Sandow trophy was awarded to Ronnie by Governor Schwarzenegger in 2004, the year Ronnie ties the Governator’s record.

The significance of 2004 is also marked by the teaming up of American Media, Inc., Weider Publications and the IFBB to promote Olympia Weekend, upping the total prize package to $540,000 and introducing the controversial Challenge Round.

It is in 2005—the 40th anniversary of the Olympia--that Ronnie ties Haney’s record for eight wins, posing the ultimate question, will Ronnie make history in 1996 by beating Lee Haney’s record and taking home his ninth Sandow?
